SMIC is China's answer to being cut off from EUV: a foundry pushing mature and near-leading-edge nodes as far as older lithography allows, at yields it does not disclose. Its capacity additions matter more than its margin, because the question it exists to answer is not whether it is profitable but whether a domestic supply chain is possible at all.
